Crohns disease And Irritable Bowel – Symptoms and Treatments

Crohn’s disease is a chronic disease, also known as inflammatory bowel disease. This disease causes ulcers in the gastrointestinal tract and can affect anywhere between the mouth and the anus. A person suffering from Crohn’s disease will definitely have a major impact on his mental health.

Who get affected?

Crohn’s disease occurs slightly more often in women than men. Approximately 1 in 1500 people has Crohn’s disease and can start between the ages of 15 to 40.

Causes

The reason for Crohn’s disease is not known and is difficult to diagnose whether a person is suffering from this disease as it can occur anywhere in the whole gastrointestinal tract. Crohn’s disease causes bowel irritation. The bowel wall’s layers become inflamed and thickened and are deeply ulcerated. This causes diarrhea with bloody stool, vomiting, constipation and rapid gain or loss of weight.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms of Crohn’s disease are abdominal pain, rectal bleeding and skin problems too. If bleeding is consistent, then it might also lead to anemia. There is a delayed growth and development in children suffering from this disease. It is needless to say that this disease affects the mental health of a person deeply.

The main characteristic of this disease is that it can occur in any part of the gastrointestinal tract, the various symptoms of this disease vary from person to person. In such diseases, the digestive tract gets affected. When the food passes through the intestines, since they are ulcerated, the food can cause the walls of the intestine to crack and the bowel can start bleeding on its own.

Crohn’s disease is non-contagious. It is believed to be caused by infections by certain bacteria; however, the exact cause of this disease is unknown. The immune system of the body also plays an important role in preventing this disease. This disease has affected a large number of people all over the world and has affected their mental health too.

Treatment

There are many biological therapies for treating Crohn’s disease. Immunosuppressant like Infliximab are commonly used to treat moderate to severely active Crohn’s disease and is helpful for people who have not got any luck in conventional therapies. This disease is chronic and affects the mental health of any person suffering from it.

There are various effective medical as well as surgical treatments for this disease. There are different medicines for different parts of the bowel that are required to be treated. If the disease has affected your rectum, then you r therapy must contain supplements like mesalamine, which is very much effective in healing and maintaining remission. This in turn improves the mental health of the person.

If you are suffering from Crohn’s disease, this disease makes it hard for the body to utilize the minerals and vitamins in food. Therefore, the doctor should advise you to have foods which are protein-rich, calorie-rich so that you get the required amount of nutrients for your body. Herbal treatments, prescribed medications, proper diet and nutritional supplements can help control Crohn’s disease.

Steroids are usually given for people suffering from severe Crohn’s disease. Steroids are no doubt powerful but are toxic. These steroids minimize inflammation and enhance the immune system of the body. Prednisone and prednisolone are some of the most widely used steroids to treat Crohn’s disease. However, steroids can affect the mental health of a person in many ways.

Excessive use of steroids can cause serious side-effects in a person. Side-effects like rapid weight gain or loss, puffiness in face, acne, high blood pressure and other psychological changes are common side-effects of using steroids. Steroids should be used when the symptoms flare-up and avoided when it is healing.

People suffering from Crohn’s disease do not have the luxury of leading a normal life. As no real causes for this disease have been established, it is difficult to say that there is a cure for this disease. The symptoms of this disease are very noticeable and can affect the mental health of a person. Currently, all the treatments for Crohn’s disease are aimed at reducing its symptoms.
