Things You Should Remember About Pain Management

Every one suffers from pain at one time or the other resulting from injury or disease. In fact pain is an important yardstick by which the status of your health can be told. Depending upon the nature and cause of pain, pain management can be simple and complex. Pain is the major parameter to judge your state of your physical and mental health.

What are various kinds of pain?

Pain can be categorized into acute and chronic pain. Acute pain is sharp. It is a normal sensation that triggers in your nervous system. Though it lasts for a shorter period (for about three to six months) but has more severity in comparison with chronic pain. If acute pain is not managed properly it can become chronic pain.

Chronic pain is a lingering pain that sticks with you for a longer period and you have an unpleasant sense of suffering. Chronic pain affects you comparatively for a long period (sometimes for years) and often does not respond to treatments. Generally older adults are most affected by chronic pain that also affects their mental health.

What are the causes and complications of pain?

Out of all pains back pain is most common and major reason for people to ask for medical assistance. Pain can occur due to soft tissue injury, broken bones, dental work, surgical (post-operative) pain, burn or cuts. Chronic pain can occur due to an injury, surgery, sprained back, an infection of serious nature, arthritis, cancer, or ear infection.

Chronic pain is behind headache, low back pain, cancer pain, arthritis pain. If you have chronic pain it can affect you both physically and emotionally resulting in unfit mental health. You can feel tension in your muscles, immobility, lack of appetite and energy. Chronic pain makes you feel depressed, angry and anxious.

How to manage pain?

There are many pain management techniques available. You can choose one depending upon what works best for you. You can choose medications to relieve yourself of pain. Analgesics (pain relievers and narcotic painkillers) and NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are some of the commonly prescribed pain relieving medicines.

You should remember that pain relieving medicines may make you feel comfortable and you may feel to be in a good mental health state but the state of your disease remains almost unchanged. You should not resort to indiscriminate use of these medicines since many of them have side effects. Surgery is viewed as the last resort to eliminate pain in a particular joint.

Pain management without drugs

You should tell your doctor about your history. Your doctor may advise that the pain you are suffering can be managed even without the medications. Pain management without drugs is better for your body. Learn about acupressure and its benefits on your body. Acupressure is the great source for relieving you of pain. Acupressure works by rubbing some spots of your body.

Instead of managing the pain with drugs you can try hot packs (such as a rice bag) or ice packs to relieve yourself of headaches (including migraines) since most of the time headaches are caused by stress and environmental factors.

Go for full body massage. It will relax you and help in eliminating pain in your body. You will feel less dependent upon medicines. Sit in a quiet room, relax yourself by listening to music or simply focus on something other than pain. That will lower your stress and with reduced stress you may feel relived of pain.

Make exercise part of your life. It lessens your pain especially if you are suffering from arthritis but do not forget to discuss the exercise plan with your doctor. Warm water therapy can reduce your pain and stiffness. Exercise in a pool or hot tub to get relief from your joint pains. Pain management with drugs is good for your mental health as well.

Grief and Bereavement Issues and Recovery

Each person in his life, at least once, would have experienced emotional turmoil. This can be due to the loss of a loved one or a person close to you. Grief and bereavement cause serious damage to a person’s mental health and it is very important that a bereaved person recovers from the shock quickly as it may lead to life-threatening situations.

A grief-stricken person goes through all kinds of emotions. Anger, shock, denial, fear are some of the common symptoms of grief. A bereaved person, at times shows stronger and deeper emotions that usual although those are appropriate reactions to the loss of a loved one. In such circumstances, the mental health of the person suffers a major set-back as he is emotionally unstable.

Anyone who is bereaved due to the loss of a loved one goes through the following group of stages though it is worth noting that grief and bereavement is not just liked to death. A person may go through all these stages due many different types of loss such as divorce, a financial turmoil or a life-crippling accident.

Shock and Numbness

When a person hears the news about the demise of a loved one, his mind goes into a state of shock. It is too hard for the person to believe in the news when it is sudden and unprecedented. The body goes into the state of emotional numbness. The person is flooded with the feelings of disorientation and even simple tasks seem overwhelming.

Such situations have negative effects on the mental health of a person as he goes into a dream-like state, feeling disconnected with the events and people around him.

Disorganization and Disorientation of Thoughts

The feelings of grief and bereavement are even deeper in this phase as the initial trauma of losing a loved one starts settling down in the person’s mind. Sleeplessness, anxiety and loss of appetite are some of the common physical reactions that a person goes through in these times.

As the body and mind tries to cope up with the reality, emotional feelings such as anger and depression start to emerge. The person also undergoes a series of disoriented thoughts as he fails to gather his ideas and thoughts in the process of recovering from the shock. This causes stress and eventually affects the mental health of the person.

Grief and Bereavement Recovery

This phase starts as soon as the person’s mind is out of the shock and has settled down with the sudden loss in his life. The person starts talking about his loved one again and again which gives him comfort and pleasure. Sometime, this might become a bit irritating to the other person, but the onus lies on the family members or friends to give them company when they are down.

Reintegration

The person has now dealt with the turmoil and is in the process of recovery. Now, he starts to get on with his life and his daily routine. Although the person is not completely able to forget the turmoil, nevertheless he realizes that it is only the person who is no more, but not the love for him/her. The mental health in this phase is far better than the initial stages and the person socializes well with everyone.

Treatment

After the loss of a loved one, it is obvious that the immediate family members grieve on the loss. However, there would be one such person who is close to the one who is dead. It is up to the other family members to give that person moral and emotional support and make him do things which give him pleasure. This would improve his mental health a great deal.

The general advice to bereaving people is to indulge themselves into reading and music. They should read those books which they are fond of and listen to music which calms their mind and soothes their emotions. They should look for support groups which help in recovery smoothly and give them a feeling that they are not alone.

Grief and bereavement issues are a part-and-parcel of everyone’s life, the intensity of which depends on how you feel about the person who died. Accepting the loss may take a long time and hence the healing process depends on the person. With matured thinking and control over emotions, you can avoid such issues affect your mental health.

What is the psychology of relationship in men and women?

In many circumstances men and women respond differently in life. Overcoming and dealing with conflict in a relationship is not easy and it is quite a delicate issue.

The differences in psychology between men and women may help us understand why we react differently. In married life or in a relationship there will be arguments at different times.

Battling struggle does not have to be life changing but what does make it harder to deal with is if the two partner ways of dealing with fight do not lock well. Conflict between partners affects their mental health to certain extent. Family counseling is one way to deal with conflict resolving results, and even those not married will sometimes go to counselors of relationship for help. Relationship counseling helps you to understand your partner’s point of view during the arguments.

A research conducted on mental health of men and women showed signs of anxiety when faced with abandonment and rejection, even though there were different levels of anxiety. People who are confident and self assured had low levels of stress when compared with the people with the insecurities. When a person is more independent and secured will experience less abandonment that affects you.

Research done in relationship psychology showed that the psychological reaction to relationship conflict was different in men than women. The response in men was much more detectable. In men the major response was increased noticeable anxiety. In women it showed situations that might cause emotional pain.

In women they showed increased cortisol level during the beginning and end of argument where the level decreased much faster than it did in men. Women showed more interest towards resolution for relationship conflict. In psychological aspect women work more to resolve a conflict and much quicker than men.

Seek marriage counselor or psychologist for relationship advice they will help you understand how and why men and women react differently to different circumstances. Family counselors help you recognize your problem at the early stages and get out of them.

What are the findings in psychology between partnership transitions and mental health?

The survey research found the following links between partnership transitions and mental health:

Bearing marriage or relationship partnerships were associated with good mental ability.

Poorer mental function is associated with partnership splits.

Living together was more beneficial to men’s mental health whereas marriage was more beneficial to women.

Men who had changed multiple partnership reformations had significantly better health than all other men even men in enduring first partnerships

Psychologically women take more time than the men to cope up with the relationship break-ups

How does this affect both?

Psychological findings provide more insight into the association between relationships and mental function. Surprisingly that enduring relations were associated with good mental health and break-ups with poorer mental ability. These studies suggest that marriage may be more beneficial for women, whereas some believe that men benefit more from the marriages.

What is the conclusion?

Psychological analysis shows that women are the more sharp to find the solution to conflicts at the first shot. Findings in women showed altered level of cortisol upon the recognition of the conflict which decreases at once during the resolving period. Women feel more biologically satisfied if the conflict is being dealt with.

On this account men did not show sudden or immediate desire to react on resolving the issues. But they also require the problem to be resolved. Men exhibited low degrees of worry and anxiety if their women partners exhibit more self confidence. In both men and women if these conflict if not resolved at the right time it affects your mental health. Family on the whole is a give and take policy from both men and women. In a home psychology plays major role in men and women to run a family smoothly.

Mental Health

Mental health is an important aspect of human well-being. It might be related to psychological or physiological factors. At many instances social and environmental factors affect the mental health of a human being. Mental sickness will give rise to mood swings, irritation, getting violent, negative thoughts, destructive attitude etc.

Proper balance between physical and mental health can only help to lead a normal life. It determines your self-image, understanding capability, education and other important aspects of your life. There is a need to intervene if you notice any behavioral problems in your near and dear ones. You must take an initiative to find the cause of the behavioral change and take necessary medical assistance to help your friend or relative.

Life Issues

Any problem that disturbs the normal life is generally termed as life issue. It is a broad topic and it includes relationship problems, abuse, disasters, disability, elder care, parenting, pain management, self esteem, speech problems, sexuality etc. Domestic violence and rape also comes under life issue which affects the mental health of a person.

Abusers always want to have a good control over the victim and therefore the latter feels degraded and it starts affecting the person. It is basically a mental torture that a person has to go through during problems related to life issues. This pain is much more than physical pain since it hits the emotional chord of your brain.

Life issues are common problems of day to day life but it might lead to serious mental health disorders. These health problems need special attention because the patients are most of the time in a vulnerable state of mind and require lot of patience, love and care from you and the society.

Domestic Violence and Rape

What is Domestic Violence?

Any form of abuse within the closed doors of your home is termed as a domestic violence. Most of the times women are the victims thrashed either by their spouse or boyfriend. However, there are many cases of women perpetrators involved in domestic violence.

Domestic violence can be physical or mental abuse, sexual abuse, abuse to property etc. Physical abuse include hitting, slapping, thrashing on the ground, pushing, twisting of any body part, hitting by any object etc.

Psychological abuse is related to derogatory statements, abusive language, life-threats etc. Sexual abuse can be defined as forcibly involving in sexual intimacy, forcing nudity or any kind of vaginal stimulation and involving in any other sexual activity. It is difficult to imagine the trauma of the victim which affects the mental health badly.

Rape is a form of sexual abuse in which the victim is forced to get involved in sexual activity. It is a crime which can put the perpetrator behind the bars if found guilty. Rape can be a result of any domestic violence or it may be done by strangers.

The rate of domestic violence has increased since last two decades. In United States of America, there are about 572,000 cases of domestic violence in which women are the victims by the person they are intimate with.

Domestic violence and rape affects the self esteem of the victims. The physical pain reduces with time but emotionally the person becomes weak and loses faith in all. The sense of security and safety almost vanishes from the life of the victims. Anxiety, depression, stress disorders are common mental health problems in such cases.

Usually there is no specific disorder but every individual reacts differently. There are some cases in which the victim develops suicidal tendency or self-harm. On the contrary there are victims who want to harm others and have a negative thought about every relationship.

There are millions of people all around the world who are either victims of domestic violence or rape. There are authorities and non-governmental organizations to help rape victims. Psychotherapy treatments are very effective and help the victims to overcome stressful conditions.

Never take the blame of being victimized since it will affect your mental health more than anything else. Domestic violence and rape cases are talked in the society and aren’t a taboo topic anymore.

All these stages have a tremendous impact on the mental health of the individual, which might be difficult to deal.

Disasters are natural, manmade or deliberately caused events, which have negative effects on life, property, and livelihood resulting in permanent changes in human societies. Disasters being highly disruptive cause human suffering, deprivation, hardship injury, and trauma disease and affect the mental health severely.

Effects Of Disasters And How To Cope Up With Disaster?

Disasters have both physical and mental health components and consequences. Whether it is an airplane crash, bombings, terrorist attacks, earthquake, tsunami, or hurricanes, the consequential damage to life and property is endless. The effects of disasters are trauma producing and vary by severity. Every single person responds to shock but the way he or she respond differs

There are anniversary reactions to disasters. These anniversary reactions are unresolved grief after significant looses. The reactions effect mental health as they involve several days or weeks of nightmares, fear, and anxiety. Being positive provides emotional healing during anniversary reaction as individuals try to work through the grieving process. Survivors of the disasters are mentally affected and the common reactions that take place are as follows.

Individuals may replay memories and repeated images of the trauma event that do not fade. They may have recurring dreams and nightmares about the event producing fear in their mind and hindering their day-to-day functioning.

People experience grief and sadness over the loss of property, income, home and loved ones. They may have intense feelings of loss and homesickness.

Fear and anxiety may surround you after the event giving startled responses, shock, and vigilance for safety.

Frustration guilt and anger of having lost their home and loved ones affects the mental health of the individuals interfering in the rebuilding and emotional healing after the disastrous event.

The reflections of the events of disaster are the turning points in the healing process. It helps to recognize your goals and move ahead with them in order to renew your life. It is time to recognize the courage, build stamina with the support of your family and friend, and move ahead to abettor prospective.

What can you do to cope up with disaster?

Many things can be done to cope up with disastrous events.

You should understand that reliving the feeling of disaster could lead to depression; panic attacks and has adverse effects on mental health. Therefore, you should try to recognize the thoughts as normal which each individual experiences after such an event and you are not the sole person.

Try to keep to your usual routine of work and other activities.

Take time to resolve day-to-day work and personal conflicts so that they do not add to your stress.

Do not shy away from places and people that remind you of the tragic events.

Find ways to relax and be generous towards yourself

Try to participate in leisure and recreational activities.

Recognize that something’s cannot be prevented.

Talk to family and friends about your feelings, as they are the ones who lend emotional support during grief and stress.

The severity of the event, exposure to the event and thoughts of death linger in some people even after months. Such symptoms should not be avoided and you should call the mental health clinic or a therapist to prevent mental health being affected further.

What can you do for your child?

Children are also affected from disastrous vents. They being sensitive should be dealt kindly. They should be made to understand that such events may be scary and traumatic and is okay to get upset. Words of reassurance and physical and mental support helps them to drive past the events. Involving them into activities and daily routine will help forget the traumas.

It is impossible to prevent disasters but it is always possible to plan ahead of time the various steps needed to minimize the impact of any disaster that affects the family’s mental health safety and property. The effects of disaster can be long lasting, the resulting trauma can affect those who are not directly affected by disaster but mental and physical support, and courage helps to combat adverse events.

Life issues are related to common problems or issues that involve individuals leading normal lives. Managing ones relationships, grief, losses are issues, which affect mental health and need to be dealt in a rational manner to avoid any specific disorders. Dating is one such issue that needs to be dealt with empathy, commitment, and love to form long-term lasting relationships.

Basic Introduction

Dating refers to two individuals getting together to explore the possibilities of romantic liaison. The majority of people form intense or temporary unions with more than one partner. Many adults settle down with marriage forming committed relationships while some others are unfaithful in relationships.

Affects of dating

Minorities of adults continue to date after marriage forming adulterous liaisons and affairs while some relationships thrive, some fail, and lead to divorce, death, and other circumstances. All these life issues have adverse affects on mental health in some way or the other affecting your functioning of day-to-day affairs and subsequently leading to depression, fear, stress and other mental disorders.

Dating is similar to a seed, which may or may not germinate, or which may grow potentially into a mature plant, thus dating is a fledgling relationship that may mature into an intimate relationship or may not grow into something reliable. Moving away from untrustworthy relations is painful and has an impact on your physical and mental health but being positive helps you find a reliable partner and makes you move ahead in life.

Dating tips

Be self-centered initially. Being self centered initially in the relationship is basically to find out if the relationship could work in your favor or not. Explore your emotions and feelings with your partner. If you still feel uncomfortable, it might not be the right date for you.

Be modest in your expectations. Never have high expectations so that you are let down later. Relax and enjoy your date. Never let it affect your mental health. Chances are that the date will be good but nothing special that you can look forward to it again

Expect to be rejected at some time. If you are rejected sooner it is not personal, but a favor as it is an end to an interaction that will not last in future.

Warning signs of unhealthy dating

Dating relations mature with time and change over time. Initial idealization and mutual good behavior paves way to better understanding of each other’s perspective. They learn from each other’s strengths and weakness share experiences and come to understand whether they are compatible or not. Some relations are unhealthy and unworkable. They affect your mental health and give rise to negative emotions arousing you to leave such relations.

The following list is an attempt to identify unhealthy relations while dating that can create emotional and psychological damage mental health.

Physical abuse relating to hitting, pulling arm, throwing kicking slapping by the partner should make you realize that you are into unhealthy dating.

Quick attachment and expression in dating relates to commit easily and plan your future. It reflects shallow emotions from the partner, as commitment requires lot of time and thinking. The rapid sign of love is actually detachment from you as quickly as committed.

Some individuals try to drive away your friends and family from you by convincing that they are taking advantage of you, and they are bad. They also dampen your self-confidence by correcting you every time making you feel low and unintelligent.

When the blame is always showered on an individual for the unhealthy behavior of the partner, it is time to move away from the relationship.

Breakup panic always affects the mental health of either partner. Abusive partners often threaten to leave, plead, and promise to change after marriage. This behavior should be avoided as it is fatal and will recoup again in life later.

Dating induces lot of desires and expectations, which both the partners expect to fulfill without having a negative impact on mental health. Thus, healthy dating with a proper mindset allows you to accomplish realistic goals of fulfillment and exploring others perspective of settling down into long term relationships or moving to the next one.

Disability is the fundamental difficulty in accomplishing things. They can be physical in nature, (inability to walk) sensory, (blindness or deafness) cognitive, (mental retardation) behavioral, (inability to work) or even related to mental health.

Disabilities can be major impediments to participating in society. For example: A computer is a major requirement for employment these days but people who are blind or handicapped are unable to operate it. While some deaf people are able to engage in normal conversations, they require technologies based on their needs, to watch a simple thing as television. Surviving disabilities are normal life issues..

Mental Health – Coming to Terms with Disabilities

Disability is the fundamental difficulty in accomplishing things. They can be physical in nature, (inability to walk) sensory, (blindness or deafness) cognitive, (mental retardation) behavioral, (inability to work) or even related to mental health.

Disabilities can be major impediments to participating in society. For example: A computer is a major requirement for employment these days but people who are blind or handicapped are unable to operate it. While some deaf people are able to engage in normal conversations, they require technologies based on their needs, to watch a simple thing as television. Surviving disabilities are normal life issues.

Causes of Disability

Physical or mental health disabilities can develop suddenly, are inborn, or can gradually develop without the person even knowing it. Disability can be genetically predisposed or results due to polluted environment and the changing lifestyles. The cause being sudden it is difficult to come in terms with it.

Imagine you are leading a normal happy life but a sudden accident leaves you handicapped. It tremendously affects your mental health, as things seem to fall apart. You pose financial crisis as you loose your job and are unable to support your family. This is the hardest time and coping with it is half the battle won.

Impact of disability

Disabilities can have tremendous psychological effects. Disability means the loss of range of functioning or never to have acquired that functioning in the first place. Disability can lead people to isolate from others. The society being very cruel and clueless ends up treating disabled individuals differently. Grief, loss, helplessness, neglect, self-pity are some of the feelings that cascade into depression and related mental health disorders.

One possible affect of being disabled is not being able to take simple things for granted and perform daily routine functions effortlessly which otherwise would have been easier to do so. Consciousness and acceptance of disability can help people come out of depression and other mental health states.

Steps that help you cope with disability

These are the following steps that will guide you in the right direction.

You should come to terms with your illness. The whole world looks upside down when you start believing that life will never be the same. You might loose your friends, as you are unable to socialize with them. This is the time for you to judge who your real friends are. Being disabled should not lessen your spirit. Positive attitude plays a very important role as it helps you overcome your depression and encourages you to live a productive life in spite of the limitations. You can either stay depressed and complain and crib about your disability for the rest of your life or take the most out of it through positive approach.

Seek help from professional and support groups as they help you to gain strength and make you learn the positive ways to cope up with illness. Friends and family offer good support. You can talk about your discomforts and other mental health problems with them by joining support groups you will come across people with similar problems like yours and thus socializing will help you enrich each other’s life.

Try to eliminate stress from your life, as it is the cause of many mental health and physical disabilities. Involve yourself in activities that you enjoy doing. If you cannot exercise you can practice meditation, which will help you, relax? Therapies prove to be very useful if done under proper guidance. Eat a healthy diet. Learn to express emotions in a constructive way and eliminate things and situations that give you stress.

Nurture yourself. Do not dwell in the past. Think about your goals and try to achieve them. Bigger tasks can be broken into small ones and managed efficiently. The inner strength in you will pave the way for your achievements. Think of the good times and how you recouped up with the bad times.

You can come in terms with disability but it may be difficult and take time. However, it will improve your quality of mental health and overall life.

Different Forms Of Child Care- Advantages And Disadvantages

Childcare refers to the act of caring for and monitoring minor children. It covers wide areas like chill activities, conventions, development, and institutions. The parents will need to mutually decide amongst them to take up specific responsibilities in the upbringing of child on aspects like physical, social and mental health development since they are very important in the early years.

Forms of childcare

Childcare can be classified into 3 categories:

In- home care

Childcare centers

Family child care

In-home Care

In-home care involves leaving the child in the supervision of a nanny in the house. This has its advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages

Home Care allows the child to remain in his own surroundings free from the negative behavior of other children. The child gets individual attention and care at home.

The caregiver of your child will look after your child if he is ill and no separate arrangements have to make.

The child feels secure in the home environment thus eliminating his fears of anxiety, which may otherwise affect his mental health.

Disadvantages

Caregivers may prove costly or difficult to find someone who is willing to accept. The benefits, the wages may go beyond their budget,

You are dependant on your caregiver for the ability to work.

You cannot judge e or supervise the performance of the care giver as you are away at work

If your caregiver leaves unexpectedly in crisis or for vacation, it becomes difficult to find the new one and to adjust with the new caregiver.

The privacy and security is limited if the caregiver stays at home.

Child care Centers

Childcare centers are daycare centers, which offer a formal structured environment for the children

Advantages

Childcare centers have clear-cut rules for parents to follow which makes you aware as to what is expected out of you.

Arrangement at centers are usually stable and not affected by the staffs absence or illness,

There are trained professionals in centers who nurture and develop the Childs skills accordingly.

Centers provide range of activities from playing, singing, dancing, and learning in a structured and methodical way.

Children get to socialize with the children of their age groups.

Disadvantages

Parents need to adjust their schedules with daycare and adapt to the changes.

Some children have difficulty in adapting the new environment with new people around which affects their mental health to some extent giving them a feeling of withdrawal from their parents.

There may be a sense of instability in children in creating friendships and sharing the surroundings, which solely do not belong to them affecting their mental health.

Child care is limited to groups and individual attention cannot be given

Relative or family care

This is a childcare provided by a relative or in the parent’s home. A relative may be a grandparent, aunt, sibling, or cousin.

Advantages

There are many advantages of relative care.

Parents being the relative know that their child needs will be met. Relative being a family member instills social and cultural values and enhances child development.

There is more flexibility, as parents need not adjust their timings. The family member accommodates the child needs.

The cost is negotiable or may not involve in paying, as the relative is a family member. The child feels secure in a homely environment with a known relative and it does not affect his physical and mental health. He can relate things more openly to the relative.

Disadvantages

However there are certain disadvantages of relative care.

An elderly person may lack the stamina to cope up with he infants moves.

Disagreement between the parents and relative can affect mental health of children and hamper childcare.

The child lacks interaction with other kids, which is fundamental for social and mental health development.

Childcare involves not only physical development but also mental health development. The earlier years of the child are very crucial and require proper supervision and monitoring. Therefore considering good childcare will prove to be beneficial for the parents as well as the child.

Understand the adoption process

There are some common problems, crisis or issues that can happen to any person leading a normal life. They may include managing one’s relationships, staying in sound state of mental health, fighting disabilities, dealing with abuse, grief and loss, or self-esteem issues. One of the important life issues is adoption.

There are many people who take care of a child for a certain (long or short) period. Adoption is altogether a different state of affairs where a very high degree of commitment is expected from you. Adoption is when you take a child from his/her birth parents into your own family and legally raise him or her as your own child.

Having adopted a child you become the adoptive parent/s. Your adopted child is entitled to all the privileges (including the right to inherit) belonging to your natural child. You as adoptive parent/s assume all the legal and social responsibilities of the child.

Adoption creates a parent-child relation between the adoptive parents and the adopted child and this in turn is responsible for sound mental health.

Why people go for adoption?

There are many reasons for people to decide to adopt a child. Some of them include: If you or your partner is infertile; if you are a female and you crossed the ‘medically safe’ age to bear a child; you may have your own children but still desire to raise children to create a larger family; you wish to add a girl or boy child to your family.

You may decide to adopt a child because there are chances of passing on genetic or medical conditions to your own child; you as a mother do not wish to risk a natural pregnancy due to your health complications; you wish to give a destitute child love, care and support of a family. You may also go for adoption to keep your mental health in fit condition.

What are the adoption formalities?

The adoption process is long and tedious. A lot of formalities have to be completed before adoption can take place, e.g. paperwork, legal assistance, help from social organizations and social workers etc. You start the adoption process by getting your application for adoption to pass through administrative and bureaucratic hurdles.

The adoption agency takes time to complete the formalities at their end. A social worker visits your place to do the home study. The formalities become long-winded and wearisome in case the child is being adopted from another country in which case you may have to visit that country to complete the process. All this involves a lot of paperwork, money, time, energy and above all the patience.

What are the responsibilities if you go for adoption?

Adoption is legally binding on you as adoptive parents. You just cannot abandon the adopted child. Your responsibility as adoptive parent/s is to establish a bonding with your adopted child. You should be sensitive and proficient in dealing with many adoption issues that can take place after the adoption. This is important for your and your adopted child’s mental health.

You should take care and see that the adopted child bonds well with you and the other members of the family. If the adopted child is an infant, it is easier and quicker for you and your adopted child to draw to each other. For older adopted children it may take a little longer to emotionally unite with you.

What is disrupted adoption?

In the initial period of adoption process the adoption may fall through if birth parents change their mind since the adoption is not final and binding until the legal process is completed. To ward off such an occurrence it is important to counsel the birth parents and have them sign off on the adoption.

Post-adoption care

It is important for you to understand that the child whom you have adopted has separated from her birth parents and needs a very careful handling. Instill a feeling of trust, love and affection in the adopted child to keep her and yourself in a marvelous state of mental health.
